Dyana Wells is a Dharma, Meditation and Yoga teacher

I’ve lived most of my life around the sea, starting out as a child crossing the Raglan harbour on my grandfather’s boat, right up to this year cruising the Hauraki Gulf with my younger sister, a master mariner.

And in between there’ve been sailing, swimming, snorkelling retreats on innumerable family holidays, leading to a major sailing adventure over to the Pacific Islands, the subject of my trilogy, Anchors in the Open Sea.

Offshore cruising is often not a cruise! That’s right. An apparently simple journey from Auckland to Fiji can be both exhilarating and exhausting in equal measures, from being thrown around the boat, throwing up over the rails and throwing wet clothes down in disgust.  Every new day I was still weary but somehow reinvigorated by a deep love of the ocean and its wonderful embrace.

I’m an ardent lover of the bigger adventures, both in sailing and life. “What is life?” and “Who am I?” have been constant  companions, launching me into science, philosophy, spirituality … and love!

Kayaking and mountaineering.

One of the many adventures undertaken by Dyana and her family.

My journeying through life as a mother, manager, yogi and wanderer revealed that meaning and independence were far greater lures than the suburban lifestyle. And I was so fortunate to have eager children, ready for each new adventure, and a father willing to undertake ocean voyages almost at the drop of a sailing cap.

The need to place my feet on the ground, lead to mountain adventures in the magnificent New Zealand ranges and bush reserves, with my head in the clouds, to long meditation retreats in places like Galiano Island (if travelling north, just turn left near Vancouver mainland).

These life experiences — and many more — are detailed in the Anchors in an Open Sea trilogy, beginning with book 1: The Yoga of Sailing.
